Torre Mozza

Ugento (LE) · Puglia

Physical

A beach near the village of Ugento in southern Salento. A ruined Spanish tower — the Torre Mozza, meaning cut tower — stands at the shore. The sand is pale and the water shallow and clear.

Social

Local and regional visitors. The ruined tower gives the beach a specific identity beyond the generic Salento beach. The mood is relaxed and the presence is moderate even in summer.

Context

The Torre Mozza is another remnant of the 16th-century Aragonese coastal defence system. Like Torre Pali, it was built to spot Ottoman raids before they reached the villages inland. The truncated state of the tower — damaged, not completed — is part of its name and character.
