Torre Pali
Physical
A natural beach near the village of Salve in the southernmost part of Salento. The sand is pale and fine, the water shallow and clear. A Spanish coastal tower from the 16th century stands above the beach. Low vegetation and dunes are present.
Social
Mostly local residents and Salento visitors seeking beaches outside the main tourist circuits. The beach retains a strong local character and is less internationally known than Punta Prosciutto or the beaches of the Porto Cesareo area.
Context
The Spanish tower was built in the 16th century as part of a coastal defence system against Ottoman raids along the Salento coast. Many of these towers survive and are now landmarks on the beach landscapes of southern Puglia.
Environment
Natural dune system with low coastal vegetation.
