San Vincenzo (LI) · Toscana

Physical

A beach named for the coastal watchtower above it, part of the historic surveillance system that once ran along the entire Tuscan coast. A 19th-century pine forest behind it was planted to stabilise the dunes.

Social

Used mainly by local residents, in a landscape shaped as much by defensive history as by leisure.

Context

The tower belonged to a network of coastal watchtowers that once monitored the Tuscan shoreline for incursions. The pine forest was a later, deliberate intervention to control dune erosion.
