Flesh·Sand

An ongoing visual, anthropological and social study of the beach and coastal life.

Not a landscape, but a territory.

How do we inhabit the beach?

The Project

Flesh Sand is a photographic and visual-art project with a socio-anthropological base: an ongoing aerial survey of the Italian coastline, treating each beach not as a view but as a social system to be recorded. From above, the improvised order of umbrellas, bodies, boundaries and shade becomes legible — habits repeated so consistently they start to look like law.

Every location entered into the archive is classified, not just photographed. The project began in Italy and grows one coastline at a time, building toward a printed volume and a body of work shown in galleries — but the record stays public and keeps expanding in the open, one field survey at a time.

The Six Layers

Every location in the archive is read through the same six layers — a fixed lens, applied place by place, so that a crowded resort and an empty cove can be compared on equal terms. Together they describe not just what a place looks like, but how it is shaped, occupied, and lived in.

  1. TerritorioTerrainThe physical shape of the place — sand, rock, water, the built edge that contains it.
  2. CorpoBodyHow the human body occupies, marks and exposes itself on the shore.
  3. IdentitàIdentityWho claims the space — locals, visitors, class, community.
  4. NaturaNatureThe relationship between the place and the wild it borders — domesticated, negotiated, or in dialogue.
  5. TempoTimeThe rhythm — daily, seasonal, generational — that repeats here.
  6. Logica AereaAerial LogicThe pattern visible only from directly above — the reading the ground never gives.
