Spiaggia di Riccione
Physical
A very long, densely packed Adriatic beach with fine golden sand. Coloured umbrellas and sun loungers fill the shore in tight rows from the water's edge to the pinewood. The seafront is heavily built with hotels and commercial establishments.
Social
One of Italy's busiest summer beach destinations, popular with young adults and families. The beach operates as part of a broader entertainment system — discotheques, bars, and events extend the social life of the beach into the night. People are highly visible and socially active.
Context
Riccione grew rapidly as a beach resort in the early 20th century. Mussolini's family had a villa here. In the postwar period it became the capital of Adriatic youth culture and nightlife. It represents the most developed form of the Italian stabilimento system.
Environment
Coastal erosion documented, addressed through recurring beach nourishment works.
