Spiaggia di Polignano a Mare
Physical
A small sandy beach at the base of cliffs below Polignano a Mare. The town perches on a limestone headland directly above. The water is very clear and the surrounding rock formations are dramatic. The beach is small and gets crowded quickly.
Social
Very popular with tourists, who come as much for the visual spectacle of the clifftop town as for the beach itself. Cliff diving competitions are held here annually. The social atmosphere is energetic and performative.
Context
Polignano a Mare has been inhabited since ancient times. The singer Domenico Modugno, who wrote Volare, was born here. In recent years the town has become one of the most Instagrammed places in Puglia, creating significant pressure on a small and fragile site.
Environment
High seasonal tourist pressure on a small, fragile cliff-backed cove.
