Spiaggia di Rimini

Rimini (RN) · Emilia-Romagna

Physical

A very wide, flat sandy beach stretching for kilometres along the Adriatic. The sand is golden and the sea is shallow and calm. Umbrellas and sun loungers form a dense geometric grid visible from above as a mosaic of colour.

Social

The most iconic Italian beach destination. In summer the density of people is extraordinary. Families, couples, young groups, and international tourists all share the same compressed space. The beach is simultaneously a leisure machine and a theatre of Italian summer identity.

Context

Rimini has attracted visitors since Roman times — the city has a triumphal arch and a Roman bridge. The modern beach resort developed from the 1840s. Federico Fellini was born here and filmed part of Amarcord and 8½ on this beach. The stabilimenti system here is the most mature in Italy.

Environment

Coastal erosion documented along this stretch, addressed through beach nourishment and breakwater reinforcement.
