Spiaggia di Otranto
Physical
A sandy beach beside the walled city of Otranto on the southern Adriatic. The sand is pale and the water is typically very clear. The medieval castle and old town walls are visible directly behind the beach.
Social
A popular tourist destination, especially for Italian visitors exploring the Salento. The historic city draws visitors who also use the beach. The atmosphere mixes cultural tourism with beach leisure.
Context
Otranto is the easternmost city in Italy, at the entrance to the Adriatic. In 1480 it was captured by Ottoman forces and 800 residents were killed for refusing to convert to Islam — the 800 Martyrs of Otranto. The city has extraordinary layers of historical memory beneath its summer tourist surface.
