The Territory
Spiaggia di Ortona
Physical
The town beach of Ortona, a mid-sized Adriatic city. Sandy, flat, and wide, with stabilimenti covering most of the shore. The harbour and historic port are visible nearby.
Social
Mainly local residents and regional tourists. Less internationally known than Rimini or Riccione, so the atmosphere is more ordinary and less performative. People come here simply to be at the sea.
Context
Ortona was the site of a major World War II battle in 1943. The town was heavily damaged. Today the waterfront has been rebuilt as a leisure space, layering tourist infrastructure over a landscape of significant historical memory.
Environment
Coastal erosion documented; harbour infrastructure also alters the shoreline nearby.
