Spiaggia di Leuca
Physical
The beach at Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost tip of Puglia. The shore is partly sandy, partly rocky. The point where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet is visible from here. A sanctuary and a lighthouse mark the cape.
Social
Visited as a destination as much as a beach — people come to reach the end of Italy. A mix of religious pilgrims visiting the sanctuary, tourists completing a journey through the Salento, and local families. The symbolic weight of the place shapes behaviour.
Context
Leuca has been a place of pilgrimage since ancient times — the sanctuary sits on a site used in antiquity for worship. In the 19th century a system of waterfalls was created to bring water from a canal above the cliff face down to the sea. These are still active.
Environment
Coastal cliff modified by a 19th-century artificial waterfall canal channelling water to the sea.
