Spiaggia di Lignano Sabbiadoro
Physical
A very long sandy beach on the northern Adriatic, at the edge of a peninsula between the lagoon and the sea. The sand is pale golden and the sea is shallow and calm. The beach is wide and the infrastructure is extensive.
Social
Largely dominated by Austrian and Central European tourists, who have been coming here since the resort was developed in the early 20th century. The beach culture here has a distinct Central European flavour. Families stay for weeks, not just days.
Context
Lignano Sabbiadoro was developed as a planned resort starting in 1903. Its name means 'golden sand'. It became particularly popular with Austrian and German visitors after World War II. The town was almost entirely purpose-built for tourism.
Environment
Coastal erosion documented, addressed through beach nourishment and protective barriers.
