Le Vaschette, Il Romito
Physical
Natural rock pools cut into sandstone (arenaria) cliffs on the Romito coast south of Livorno. The pools are the remains of ancient quarry cuts, now filled by the sea. The rock is a warm orange-brown. The water inside the pools is calm and clear.
Social
Used year-round by local Livornese, particularly those who know the coast well. Access requires navigating the rocky cliff path. The pools allow swimming in very calm conditions even when the sea is rough. A specific and physically demanding beach experience.
Context
The Vaschette are ancient Etruscan and Roman quarry cuts — the arenaria (sandstone) was extracted here for building in Livorno and the surrounding region. The quarry marks, squared walls and cut steps, are still clearly visible. The site is one of the few places where ancient industrial archaeology and contemporary beach use directly overlap.
Environment
Rocky sandstone coastline reshaped by ancient quarrying, now forming natural pools.
