Lago Trasimeno
Physical
Italy's fourth largest lake, in landlocked Umbria. The shores are flat, with reed beds, beaches of sand and gravel, and low wooded hills in the background. The water is shallow and warm in summer.
Social
Mainly local Umbrian residents and tourists visiting Assisi, Perugia, and the surrounding medieval towns. For the inhabitants of an entirely landlocked region, Trasimeno is the sea substitute. The beach culture mirrors the sea beach but at a smaller scale.
Context
The Battle of Lake Trasimeno (217 BC) was one of the worst defeats in Roman military history — Hannibal ambushed a Roman army here and killed 15,000 soldiers. The lake has also been subject to significant water level fluctuations over the centuries. It is now a regional park.
Environment
Shallow lake documented to have undergone significant water-level fluctuations historically; now within a regional park.
