The Ritual
Lago di Lavarone
Physical
A small lake in the high plateau of Lavarone, at 1,100 metres altitude. The shore is grassy and wooded. The water is cold and clear. The setting is Alpine rather than typically Italian coastal.
Social
Used for walking, swimming, and quiet relaxation. Mainly local residents and visitors from the Veneto. Sigmund Freud visited Lavarone regularly in the early 20th century. The atmosphere is reflective and cooler than the summer beach.
Context
Lavarone was a favoured retreat for Central European intellectuals in the early 20th century, including Freud. The plateau saw significant fighting in World War I. The lake is an unusual combination of intellectual heritage and Alpine nature.
Environment
Natural Alpine lake shoreline within a wooded high plateau.
