Spiaggia di Castiglioncello

Castiglioncello (LI) · Toscana

Physical

A small beach at the base of the Castiglioncello promontory, with pebbles and rocky outcrops. Pine trees rise steeply above. The water is clear and the setting is enclosed and shaded at certain times of day.

Social

Local residents and middle-class Tuscan summer visitors. The atmosphere is quiet compared to Viareggio or Forte dei Marmi. People come here for calm rather than spectacle.

Context

Castiglioncello's history as an artistic retreat gives it a particular cultural patina. It was popular with the Italian film industry in the 1960s, and Marcello Mastroianni spent summers here. This history is present in the character of the place without being immediately visible.

Environment

Rocky, pebble shoreline backed by pine woodland.
