Spiaggia di Baratti
Physical
A bay of pale sand near Piombino on the Etruscan Coast, in the Gulf of Baratti. The water is calm and clear. The surrounding hills are covered with Mediterranean scrub. An Etruscan necropolis is located in the forest immediately above the bay.
Social
Families and middle-class Tuscan visitors. The beach is popular but retains a relatively natural character compared to the main resort beaches further north. People come for both the beach and the archaeological site.
Context
The Gulf of Baratti was the harbour of Populonia, the only Etruscan city built directly on the sea. The surrounding hills contain one of Italy's most important Etruscan cemeteries. The beach sits at the base of a landscape that has been continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years.
Environment
Located within the protected Baratti-Populonia natural area (Area Naturale Protetta di Interesse Locale).
