The Leisure Machine
Scoglio Monterosso
Physical
The large rock formation between Monterosso's old and new towns, with a famous concrete Giant statue at its base. The rock divides the two beach sections. The sea around it is clear and deep.
Social
Tourists photograph the statue and the rock. Local swimmers sometimes use the rocks around its base. The Giant acts as a visual marker and a meeting point, functioning as a social anchor for the beach space.
Context
The Giant of Monterosso is a concrete sculpture built in 1910, partially destroyed in World War II, and never fully restored. It was part of a private villa that no longer exists. The sculpture is now a public symbol of the village.
Environment
Rocky shoreline within the Cinque Terre National Park and its Marine Protected Area.
