Riomaggiore
Physical
Like most Cinque Terre villages, Riomaggiore has no beach — just a small harbour with concrete platforms and a boat ramp. The coloured houses of the village rise steeply from the water. The sea is clear and the water entry is from concrete and rock.
Social
The harbour is a meeting point for locals in the evening and for tourists throughout the day. Swimming happens from the concrete platforms. There is a strong contrast between the tourists moving through and the residents living a normal coastal life.
Context
Riomaggiore is the southernmost Cinque Terre village. Like the others, it was historically isolated by its terrain and connected mainly by sea. Tourism arrived with the railway and became dominant in the late 20th century.
Environment
No natural beach; concrete harbour platforms alter the shoreline, within the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area.
