Punta Prosciutto
Physical
A natural beach in the Porto Cesareo area of Salento, with very white fine sand and water that is extremely shallow and turquoise for a long distance from the shore. There is almost no built infrastructure. Dunes and low Mediterranean vegetation surround it.
Social
Visitors come for the exceptional water quality and natural setting. Access by car is managed to limit overcrowding. People spread out naturally across a wide area rather than clustering in rows. The atmosphere is calmer and more nature-oriented than organised beach resorts.
Context
The beach sits within the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area. The area has been under various forms of environmental protection since 1999. The dune system behind the beach is partially preserved and represents a natural coastal ecosystem increasingly rare in Italy.
Environment
Located within the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area; natural dune system partially preserved.
