Marina di Pesculuse

Ugento (LE) · Puglia

Physical

A wide, flat beach with extremely pale sand and shallow turquoise water, sometimes called the Maldives of Salento. The landscape is open with low dunes and Mediterranean scrub. Very little infrastructure is visible.

Social

Popular with visitors from across Puglia and beyond, drawn by the reputation for exceptional water colour. In summer it can become crowded. The comparison to the Maldives says more about the aspiration of Italian beach marketing than about the actual place.

Context

The area around Marina di Pesculuse is partly within the Dune Costiere Protected Area. The coastal dune system here is one of the more intact on the Ionian coast. The exotic nickname reflects a broader Italian tendency to brand natural beaches with tropical comparisons.

Environment

Protected coastal dune system within the Dune Costiere Protected Area.
