Manarola Scogliera
Physical
There is no sandy beach at Manarola. The village sits on a rocky headland above the sea. Locals use a flat platform of smoothed rock and concrete as a swimming spot, entering the water via iron ladders. The water is deep and very clear.
Social
In summer, tourists photograph from above while local residents and a small number of swimmers actually use the rocks. The number of people in the water is always modest compared to the crowds watching from the path.
Context
Manarola is one of the five villages of Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village economy was traditionally based on viticulture and fishing. Tourism became the dominant activity in the late 20th century.
Environment
No natural beach; rocky, erosion-resistant shoreline modified with a concrete swimming platform, within a UNESCO-protected landscape.
