The Leisure Machine
Lido Riccio
Physical
A managed beach just north of Ortona, with yellow-gold sand and a straight, open shoreline. Rows of coloured umbrellas run the full length. The beach is flat and easy to walk.
Social
Families and local residents from Ortona and surrounding towns. Crowded in July and August. The pace is calm and domestic — people bring food, set up for the whole day, and return to the same spots each year.
Context
Lido Riccio is part of the broader Adriatic resort system that developed rapidly after World War II. Like much of this coastline, it relies on beach concessions (stabilimenti) that divide and sell access to the shore.
Environment
Coastal erosion documented along this stretch of the Abruzzo coast.
