Physical
A small lake beach on Lake Orta, a compact and quiet lake in the Piedmont. The shore is grassy and slightly pebbly. The water is calm and the lake is enclosed by wooded hills. San Giulio island is visible from the shore.
Social
Mainly local visitors and Italian tourists. Lake Orta is much smaller and quieter than Lake Maggiore or Lake Garda. The atmosphere is relaxed and the social activity is low-key.
Context
Lake Orta is one of Italy's smaller and lesser-known lakes. It avoided the large-scale tourism development that changed Maggiore and Como. San Giulio island has a basilica dating to the 4th century. The lake has been lightly protected from excessive development.
Environment
Lake Orta suffered severe industrial acidification pollution in the 20th century, remediated through a liming programme begun in 1989.
