Lido di Metaponto
Physical
A long, flat sandy beach on the Ionian coast of Basilicata. The sand is light-coloured and the water is shallow and calm. The landscape around it is very flat, with agricultural land close to the shore.
Social
Mostly local and regional visitors. The beach is popular with families from inland Basilicata and Calabria. It is quiet compared to Adriatic resorts and has a slower, more anonymous rhythm.
Context
Metaponto was a major ancient Greek colony — the philosopher Pythagoras spent his final years here. The surrounding area contains important archaeological sites. The beach itself developed as a modern resort in the postwar period, largely disconnected from its ancient past.
Environment
Severe coastal erosion documented, with parts of the beach reported at risk of disappearing.
