The Edge
Capo Vaticano
Physical
A dramatic rocky headland on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. Pink granite cliffs drop into the sea, forming small coves with clear turquoise water. The landscape is open and exposed, with no large buildings nearby.
Social
Mostly tourists and visitors seeking scenery and clear water. Access to many coves is on foot only. People come here to swim, snorkel, and look at the view rather than to socialise or be seen.
Context
The lighthouse at Capo Vaticano dates to 1873. The area has very little tourist infrastructure — its rugged terrain slowed development. It is one of the most visually intact stretches of the Calabrian coast.
Environment
Rocky, largely erosion-resistant headland, though localized coastal erosion has been documented at some of its coves.
