The Ritual
Anzio
Physical
A sandy beach south of Rome, with a long flat shore and a working harbour nearby. The sand is grey-brown and the sea is generally calm. The beach is a mix of stabilimenti and free zones.
Social
Mostly Romans and residents from the surrounding Castelli Romani area. Anzio functions as the beach of Rome's middle-class hinterland. Family groups dominate in summer. It is a destination for a day trip rather than a long holiday.
Context
Anzio was the site of a major Allied amphibious landing in January 1944, during World War II. The battle cost thousands of lives. The town has military cemeteries and a history of immense violence beneath its current tourist surface.
Environment
Harbour infrastructure documented to alter sediment flow and contribute to coastal erosion.
