Vernazza
Physical
A small harbour village with a tiny beach of dark pebbles at the base of the main square. Fishing boats and small vessels are moored in the harbour. The village is compact and entirely built of stone, rising steeply from the water.
Social
Vernazza is considered the most picturesque Cinque Terre village and is very heavily visited. The tiny beach in the harbour is photographed far more than it is swum in. The experience here is primarily visual and architectural rather than aquatic.
Context
Vernazza was mentioned in documents from 1080. It was historically a maritime trading post. A flood in 2011 caused severe damage and required years of reconstruction. The recovery was supported partly by tourism revenue.
Environment
Small pebble harbour beach within the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area; the village suffered severe flood damage in 2011.
