Spiaggia di Stintino

Stintino (SS) · Sardegna

Physical

The main beach of the village of Stintino, near La Pelosa. A small sandy beach in the village harbour, with fishing boats and coloured vessels nearby. Less spectacular than La Pelosa but more connected to the living community.

Social

A mix of tourists staying in Stintino and local fishermen and residents. The village has a stronger identity as a fishing community than as a pure resort. The beach functions within the daily life of the village.

Context

Stintino was founded in 1885 when the inhabitants of the nearby island of Asinara were expelled following the establishment of a penal colony there. The village was built by this displaced population. The tuna fishing tradition (mattanza) was suspended in 2007 after the population of bluefin tuna collapsed.

Environment

Small harbour beach with a modified, infrastructure-lined shoreline.
