The Edge
Spiaggia di Maratea
Physical
A small rocky beach on Basilicata's only stretch of Tyrrhenian coast. The water is very clear and changes from turquoise near the shore to deep blue further out. The landscape is dramatic, with cliffs and dense vegetation coming down to the sea.
Social
Visitors looking for something wilder and less commercial than typical Italian beach resorts. Small groups and couples. The beach requires some physical effort to reach, which limits the crowd.
Context
Maratea is the only coastal town in Basilicata and has remained largely outside mass tourism. The area is protected and has low development. The giant Christ statue above the town is a local landmark visible from the sea.
Environment
Rocky shoreline within a protected area with minimal development.
