Saturnia — Le Cascate
Physical
Natural thermal pools in the Maremma inland, fed by a hot sulphurous spring. The water is milky white and around 37°C. The pools are open to the sky with rocky edges worn smooth by use. Technically not a beach — but a body of water in the open air, used for bathing.
Social
Free public access attracts a wide range of visitors — Italian families, international tourists, young travellers, and locals from the surrounding area. In summer the pools are densely occupied. The communal bathing in natural warm water creates a different social atmosphere from the sea beach.
Context
The Saturnia springs have been used since Etruscan and Roman times. The Romans built a town here. The thermal waters were associated with healing. Today the site is managed informally — the free cascate are adjacent to a private thermal spa complex.
Environment
Natural sulphurous thermal spring, not a coastal beach environment.
