Piscina Zinzilusa
Physical
A sea cave on the Salento coast near Castro, opening directly onto the Adriatic. The cave contains a natural pool connected to the sea. The water inside is calm and clear. Access is by boat or through a narrow entrance on foot.
Social
Visited mainly by curious tourists, divers, and swimmers. The experience of entering a sea cave creates a very different kind of beach encounter — enclosed, quiet, slightly unsettling. The number of visitors at any one time is naturally limited by the space.
Context
The cave has been used since prehistoric times and contains Palaeolithic remains. It is protected and has been studied by archaeologists and speleologists. The name comes from the local dialect. It is one of the more unusual natural sites in the Salento.
Environment
Protected natural sea cave with restricted access preserving its undisturbed condition.
