Nettuno
Physical
A beach town south of Rome with sandy beaches and a small historic centre behind the seafront. The shore is flat, with a mix of organised and free areas. The American military cemetery is on a pine-covered hill overlooking the sea.
Social
Similar to Anzio — a summer destination for Roman families. The town has a local character that resists full touristification. People come here for a relaxed seaside experience without the crowds of more famous destinations.
Context
Like Anzio, Nettuno was central to the 1944 Allied landings. The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery contains nearly 8,000 graves. The site is formally managed and maintained. The proximity of the cemetery to the beach creates an unusual juxtaposition of leisure and memory.
Environment
Coastal erosion documented, linked to the influence of the nearby Anzio harbour on sediment flow.
