Baia del Quercetano

Castiglioncello (LI) · Toscana

Physical

A sheltered bay at Castiglioncello on the Etruscan Coast. The shoreline is a mix of rock and pebble with some patches of sand. A dense Mediterranean pine forest comes down to the edge of the water. A small jetty stands at one end of the bay.

Social

Mainly local residents and returning summer visitors from Tuscany. The same families come back each year. The bay is calm and has a strong sense of seasonal routine and memory. It is not a beach for display — it is a beach for habit.

Context

Castiglioncello was a gathering place for Tuscan artists and intellectuals in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Macchiaioli painters worked here. The pinewood landscape they painted still exists. The bay has changed little in its essential structure.

Environment

Mixed rock-and-pebble shoreline backed by Mediterranean pine forest.
